Classes start very gently, with time for stretching and getting the body moving at your own pace. The music will take you gradually into a kind of wave of activity – from the first rhythm, ‘flowing’, through the more percussive ‘staccato’, getting faster until we hit ‘chaos’, then dropping into the lighter ‘lyrical’ music before finally sinking into the meditative sounds of ‘stillness’. We often go through two waveds of the 5 rhythms during the class. Each wave can be quite cathartic, getting out pent up feelings and energy and leaving you relaxed and refreshed.
There’s instruction and exercises but no specific steps, you don’t even have to follow the instructions if they don’t feel helpful, what’s most important to come along and be yourself. On the first Wednesday of every month, classes become Sweat sessions, which means minimal guidance from the teacher during the second wave.
We dance at a beautiful, airy, and light space with a wooden, super-sprung floor, and French windows that open to a reveal an outdoor terrace at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue in St. John's Wood.
