Alain de Botton
Resilience is the ability to recover quickly from a traumatic or difficult situation while maintaining a positive state of mind. In this world we live in, where uncertainty and news of atrocities are unfortunately part of our daily lives, we need resilience. Resilience is not innate; it is the fruit of experience.
Practising the 5 Rhythms is a good way of building resilience.
The 5 Rhythms map deepens our awareness of the world. Awareness with the Fluid Rhythm consists of paying attention to the flow of the body in movement, objectively and neutrally, and this bodily agility encourages resilience .
Staccato Rhythm asks us to connect to the world, committing us to connection. Our active engagement is an essential component of resilience, because it is a dynamic process. Connectivity is about continuing our own experience by sharing it with others. It involves support and trust, which allows us to overcome obstacles.
The Rhythm of Chaos is not the Chaos of the world; on the contrary, it is finding peace within and experiencing the release of what holds me back - releasing my expectations, my own, those connected to others, releasing something from the past or the future in order to be fully present, letting go control, believing that there are good reasons to let go of some of my attitudes, some of my experiences.
Another way of cultivating resilience is to stimulate our creativity. And Lyrical Rhythm allows us to renew ourselves, to recreate ourselves, to continue to be curious. Creativity releases inner resources that allow us to manage stress and enjoy life. When we are creative, we are full of resources and we solve problems in new and original ways.
Resilience then seeks the path of Stillness through the search for inner calm. The movement of what is calm, the dance of what is soothed within me.
It is the moving resource of anchoring oneself and remaining centred.
Flowing Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, Stillness, 5 Rhythms to explore again and again who we really are.
“In these frantic times, we need our feet on earth, our instincts intact and our intuition with all of its strength. Being faithful to the signs and signals that come from inside is our art of survival, not to mention a way to move with integrity in a changing world. Hidden and driven by the ecstatic language of the 5Rhythms, this is movement as spiritual practice, a dance, a kinetic prayer of connection with the unpredictable mystery of everything.”
