An online 5Rhythms class with Natalie Poole (Australia) and Ben Deutsch (UK)
Wednesday 29th April 6pm (Australian Eastern), 9am (UK)
“More than ever, we need to dance with purpose, to remind the world that humanity still exists.” - Gregory Vuyani Maqoma, (in his message for International Dance Day 2020)
Through 5Rhythms we can rediscover our individuality and our similarities, our separateness and our connection. We can practice setting clear boundaries when they’re needed, and also practice dissolving those boundaries when they are no longer needed. We can dance solo, in duet, in ensemble, or with the whole damn world.
Sometimes we might remember that we are dancing with the Spirit-In-All-Things.
International Dance Day is an annual event that seeks to “celebrate dance, revel in the universality of this art form, cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers, and bring people together with a common language - dance.”
And in this time, it can feel like barriers and borders are shifting in strange ways. Physical distance is demanded between neighbours, colleagues, friends. We are encouraged to choose one particular group of people with whom we may be physically close, and to exclude all others. Simultaneously, constantly evolving technology allows us to connect spontaneously with people on the other side of the World - people we might never normally meet.
In this Spirit, we - Natalie (Melbourne, Australia) and Ben (Leeds, UK) invite you to us (wherever you are) to do the dances of connection and separation, similarity and difference, community and individuality. To dance side-by-side with our global Human family.
At 9am UK time, or 6pm Australian Eastern time on Wednesday 29th April, we will create one globe-spanning dance community for two hours - a temporary autonomous zone of Body and Spirit.
Connection is via Zoom video conferencing, which Ben and Natalie have both been using to provide online classes for their local dancing communities over the last month.

“As we dance with our bodies, tumbling in space and tangling together, we become a force of movement weaving hearts, touching souls and providing healing that is so desperately needed... All we need now is to dance some more!!!!” - Gregory Vuyani Maqoma
